Women Criminal Defense Attorneys: The Grit Project

The American Bar Association (ABA) Commission on women in the Profession just launched a new initiative known as The Grit Project.  The project is an academic toolkit that's aimed toward helping women develop the correct mind-set increase the retention and promotion of women lawyers.  The thinking behind the Grit Project is that traits best-known to be related to success in law will be developed in women. this is in distinction to what several erroneously believed were traits that one was born with and coincidently viewed as completely masculine.  The Grit Project takes up the task of training and educating women lawyers to develop the very traits that research has shown are systematically found within the women succeeding in law. The Commission on women makes a robust case supported science that women leaders in law share 2 vital traits:

• Recent science suggests that grit is usually on the list of answers successful women lawyers give once asked to explain the traits that led to their success.

• similarly, a growth mind-set, or the assumption that one’s talents are flexible entities that can be developed and improved through effort, may be a trait that several extremely thriving women lawyers trust to navigate difficult situations in the workplace.

Based on this research the Grit Project sets out to teach women these important traits. The goal is to alter the dismal reality that, in spite of the fact that women and men are getting into law schools in equal numbers; the high proportion of women entering the profession has not translated into staying power and equal advancement. -

- Discussion situations like how to handle speaking up in school, the work search, and a bad grade on a midterm paper.
- Resources for law schools, bar associations, law firms, and women’s teams to introduce these ideas.
- Program agendas, PowerPoints, handouts, and speaker recommendations.
- Future reading and learning opportunities.
There are individual situations for women to prepare for certain real world circumstances, videos, conference and program agendas, a grit check, a mind-set quiz, and returning soon are lists of speakers.  Do your own grit test and begin talking regarding what you'll be able to do proactively in your community to alter the playing field for women in law. From wherever I sit, the more we work along to make sure the success of additional women within the field, the more we each ensure our own success.
